Community dialogue on financial abuse among older adults
planned for May 7 in Dublin
The New River Valley
Elder Justice Coalition, Center for Gerontology at Virginia Tech, and
Highland Ridge Rehabilitation Center will conduct a community dialogue on
financial abuse among older adults on Tuesday, May 7 from 9:30 a.m. – 12
noon in the main dining room of Highland Ridge Rehab Center in Dublin.
Brunch will be served at the event, but please note that registration is
required. To RSVP, call 540-674-4193 by May 1.
Mental Health First Aid trainings announced
New River Valley
Community Services (NRVCS) is offering Mental Health First Aid training
to interested members of the community. Mental Health First Aid is a groundbreaking public
education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond
to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.
The
two-day training will be made available on the dates listed below:
- July 22 & 23, 2013
- September 5 & 6, 2013
- November 4 & 5, 2013
- January 23 & 24, 2014
- March 6 & 7, 2014
Both training
days are from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The
training is free, but participants should plan to get lunch on their own.

Local Support Groups
|
|
Autism-Family Support Group
A support group for families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders takes
place the first Thursday of each month from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at the NRVCS
Montgomery Center (700 University City Boulevard, Blacksburg).
Children/siblings are welcome, but please RSVP if you need childcare by
calling 540-320-9281 or 540-510-5667. Light refreshments will be
provided.
The group is open to families of children living with: Autism, Asperger's
Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative
Disorder, or Rett's Disorder. Members of the
NRVCS Autism Team will facilitate the meeting, which is designed to be
educational, parent-directed, and supportive.

and Bipolar Disorder Support Group
For those with
depression or bipolar disorder

group is peer-led and focused on self-help through the sharing of
experiences, information and strategies for living successfully with a
mood disorder. The meeting is confidential and free of charge. No advance
notice is required - just show up.
This meeting is open to adults 18 and older.

group for mature women (age 50+)
“Circle of
Hope” is a new support group sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center of
the New River Valley for mature women (age 50+) with conversations around
the issue of domestic violence (physical, emotional, psychological,
financial and sexual abuse). The group meets on Fridays at 11:00 a.m. For

FLASH (Families Learning And Staying
Healthy)
Families Learning And Staying Healthy is an education and support
group provided for families of individuals with substance abuse
problems. The group meets weekly - on Monday evenings from 6:00 -
7:30 p.m. at the NRVCS Montgomery Center (700 University City Boulevard,
Blacksburg).

Veterans Outreach
Group: Veterans
of any era are invited to participate in the Veterans Outreach Group,
which meets the first and third Tuesday of every month from 6:00 - 7:30
p.m. at VFW Post 776 (102 Watts Street, Radford). The purpose of the
group is to connect veterans with their peers and provide education on
issues relevant to their military service. There is no cost to

Families of Veterans Support Group: The Families of Virginia Veterans group - a support group
for families of local veterans - holds its meetings on the second and
fourth Tuesday of each month, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at the NRVCS

Depression Recovery And Member Support
(DREAMS)
Depression Recovery And Member Support is a new consumer-driven support
group. The group meets the second Saturday of each month from 5 - 7 p.m.
at the YMCA Thrift Shop in Blacksburg.

NAMI-NRV meetings
The New River Valley Chapter of NAMI
(National Alliance on Mental Illness) meets the second Thursday of each
month (unless otherwise noted) in the ground floor conference room of the
Overlook Apartments in Radford at 7 p.m. Meetings are open to consumers,
family members, providers and all interested citizens. For more

Support group for local families
A local support group for families of someone
with a mental illness or those who have concerns about a loved one's
behavior currently meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
in the first floor Board Room of Montgomery Regional Hospital (3700 South
Main Street, Blacksburg). The meetings are completely confidential. For
