The New River Valley Crisis Intervention Team (NRVCIT) program was awarded the 2014 Virginia CIT Program of the Year Award. Patrick Halpern, Coordinator of NRVCIT, was also honored as the Virginia CIT Coordinator of the Year for 2014. (Dean Barker of the Hampton-Newport News CIT was also recognized for this award.) The awards were presented by Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring at a luncheon on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, during the 3rd Annual Virginia CIT Conference, held in Henrico County.

2014 actually marked the tenth anniversary of the New River Valley CIT program, which was the first in Virginia. The program includes 14 partner law enforcement agencies, covering the 1,500 square mile, rural region of southwest Virginia.

Since September 2004, the program has trained approximately 800 law enforcement officials from 63 law enforcement agencies throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Halpern has been involved with the New River Valley CIT program since 2007.
